1. 원급

as ~ as <-> not so ~ as (not as ~ as)

~만큼 ~하다 <-> ~만큼 ~않다

 

may as well 차라리 ~ 낫다

 

may as well A as B = would rather A than B: B보다 A낫다

 

Not so much A as B: A라기 보다 B다

 

Not so much as: ~조차 않다

 

 

2. 비교급 (er ~ than / or ~ to)

예외: Prefer A to B

강조: still / much / even / far (very는 안된다.)

 

The 비교급 ~ , the 비교급: ~하면 할수록 ~하다

 

The 비교급 of the two: 둘 중에 더 ~하다

 

Get the better of: 극복하다

 

Know rather than to V: ~할 정도로 어리석지 않다

 

Much more: 하물며 ~이다

 

Much less:: 하물며 ~아니다

 

 

3. 최상급 (The ~ est /소유격일 땐 the X)

강조: much = the very / by far

 

The last + N: ~할 것 같지 않은

 

One of the + 복수 명사: ~중에 하나다

Any other + 단수 명사: 다른 어떤 중에 ~이다

 

At most 기껏해야

 

 

4. 헷갈리는 관용어구

No more than 겨우

No less than 만큼

Not more than 기껏해야

Not less than 이상

 

No more A than B:  A가 아닌 것은 B가 아닌 것과 같다

No less A than B: A가 인 것은 B인 것과 같다

Not more A than B: B만큼 A는 그렇게 많지 않다

Not less A than B: B만큼 A는 그렇게 적지 않다

 

 

5. 시험에 나오는 비교급 구문

1) er ~ than

or ~ to (예외: prefer A to B)

 

2) the 비교급~, the 비교급

 

3) 비교급 강조: very는 안된다.   

 

 

6. 문제

다음 문장을 해석하시오

1) She paid not less than $5.

그녀는 적어도 $5이상 지불했다.

 

2) It´s no more than a mile to the ocean.

해양까지 겨우 1마일 남았다.

 

3) The boats are not more than 45 feet long.
